US airport investments continue as election looms

New winners of two of US federal government airport improvement programmes have been announced by the Federal Aviation Administration.

$123m from the Airport Improvement Programme (AIP) has been assigned to projects at more than 200 airports, while the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) programme has given a further $289m to 129 airports across the US.

Both the federal programmes are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, passed by the Biden administration and Congress in 2021.

The AIP is in its second round of funding, while the AIG is already deploying its seventh round of cash.

“Americans are flying in record numbers, and the Biden-Harris Administration continues to invest in our airports to make travel safer and more convenient for the people who pass through these airports each day,” said U.S. Transportation minister Pete Buttigieg.

“This latest round of funding will support key improvements to terminals, runways, and baggage systems and build on the work this Administration is doing to modernize our aviation infrastructure,” he added while announcing AIG winners.

Highlights of the funding included $66.7m for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to demolish its existing taxiway and build an extended apron.

Runway and taxiway improvements are also the focus of $22.2m headed to Philadelphia International Airport and $30.1m won by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

While the AIP fund is smaller, and the individual grants reflect that, apron and taxiway improvements are also a key focus for many of the airports receiving grants.

$6.8m will be used to improve the existing apron at Miami International, $4.6m will be spent on Eastern Iowa Airport to replace runway lighting and taxiway reconstruction, and similar improvements will be funded at Cape Giradeau Regional airport in Missouri.

But the airside infrastructure is not the only area to be improved, with John Wayne Airport in California’s world-renowned Orange County spending $3.8m on two new passenger terminal escalators.

“This $123m investment helps airports across the Nation sustain and improve critical infrastructure to advance the safest, most efficient airport system in the world,” said FAA associate administrator for airports Shannetta Griffin.

President Biden and his supporters will be keen to promote the federal spending, as the November Presidential poll looms large.
