2024 Student Art Exhibition Opening Reception Honors 47 Artists

Adjunct Professor of Art, Shirin Rastin, joined our Fullerton College community at the exhibition’s grand opening.

The 2024 Student Art Exhibition by the Division of Fine Arts opened its doors to the public on May 2, welcoming more than 700 guests to experience the artistry of our students. The event featured an opening reception, followed by an awards ceremony that honored 47 students for their skill across different mediums.

The annual exhibition allows students to unleash their inner creativity.

“I am mostly excited to bring exhibitions to the gallery that decolonize the museum as an institution and continue to create shows that push boundaries and ideas,” said Art Gallery Curator and Museum Studies Professor, Jasmine McNeal. “My overall goal is to continue to guide students to understand the diverse avenues the art world presents and help them challenge the historical ways we have created exhibitions in the past.”

The gallery features a variety of art pieces created by Fullerton College students. “Braiding Performance,” by Noe Villa Figueroa, represents maternal love and the need to include artists of color in galleries and museum spaces. As a performance art sculpture, Villa Figueroa’s work was selected for the President’s Award for its detail, sentiment and ability to challenge history.

Noe Villa Figueroa and his sculpture “Braiding Performance” included a 20-minute braiding performance, representing an act of ancestral knowledge and motherly love.

To participate, students are invited to submit artwork to a judging panel of full-time faculty. Once faculty vote on submissions, Fullerton College’s museum studies staff, in collaboration with students, begin to curate the show.

Fullerton College thanks the faculty and staff in the Division of Fine Arts for supporting our students and shaping them into the artists of our future, one exhibition at a time.

The Student Art Exhibition will remain open daily from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m. until Wednesday, May 15 in the Fullerton College art gallery, Building 1000, Room 1004. Admission is free. For more information on the exhibition, please visit the Fullerton College art department’s website.
