Gallery celebrates its 20th birthday

July 5, 20242 Mins Read

In June 2004, Soma Gallery opened its doors in Clifton Arcade, celebrating modern artwork, illustration and design from local creators and an assortment of UK-based artists.

The space has grown and evolved since then, moving from Clifton Village to focus on promoting an accessible and affordable online art platform, as well as hosting regular pop-up shows and exhibitions.

This year, Soma is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, 20 artists have been invited to create original, limited edition pieces for the gallery, with work from creators including Crispin Finn, Anna Marrow and Anthony Burrill.

Ahead of the release, Soma’s lead curator Fiona Hamilton said: “This has resulted in a fantastic collection of artwork in a variety of media.”

“We have screen print, wood engraving, letterpress and glitter as a glimpse of some of the processes the artists have employed.”

This collection initially launched on the Soma Gallery’s website on June 26, with a physical launch on Saturday, June 29 at BABE (Bristol Artists Book Event) at UWE Bower Ashton Studios.

There is still a chance to see these artworks, as Soma is following up with a pop-up exhibition at Frankenstein Press, Bedminster, from Friday to Sunday.

There will be opportunities to meet some of the local artists who are connected with the project, alongside demonstrations from a few of the creators.

As part of this project, each participating artist will receive a set of the twenty prints, with the remaining 30 prints being made available to the public to purchase.

Each print is signed and numbered and can be purchased either online or at any Soma Gallery event.
