From recycled sculpture to pop-up photography, Honiton’s Summer Art Week gives young people the tools — and freedom — to create something brilliant
Teenagers will get the chance to dabble in everything from printmaking to photography as a popular Devon gallery unveils a packed programme of creative workshops this August.
The Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) in Honiton is hosting its Summer Art Week 2025 for young people aged 11 to 17, offering a chance to try new art forms with guidance from professional artists. Each workshop costs £5 and runs from 11am to 3pm.
Starting on Tuesday, August 19, the week kicks off with a cardboard sculpting session led by artist James Lake, where participants can construct a replica trainer using recycled materials. This is followed by a printmaking workshop with Simon Ripley from Double Elephant Print Workshop on Wednesday, August 20.
On Thursday, August 21, young creatives will experiment with light and shadow in a pop-up darkroom under the guidance of photographer Marcus Davies. Friday, August 22, features the ‘Stitchtastic’ embroidery and darning workshop led by Molly Rooke, focused on bringing new life and colour to clothing.
The week concludes with a free Family Drop-in Workshop on Saturday, August 23, hosted by the Crafting Cowboy. The event welcomes all ages and abilities to help create “colourful critters” to “brighten the sky”. A donation of £4 is suggested.
Summer Art Week forms part of THG’s ‘Create our Space’ youth project, supported by Arts Council England. The initiative aims to encourage young people to engage with galleries and explore their creativity in inclusive and imaginative ways.
Councillor Nick Hookway, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for culture, sport, leisure and tourism, said: “This is a really exciting summer holiday offer for 11 to 17-year-olds to get creative and learn new skills with experienced local artists. We welcome young people to come along and try an inspiring new activity each day over Summer Art Week this August.”
