New Glasgow art exhibition explores ‘collapse of meaning in modern life’

September 29, 20252 Mins Read

A new art exhibition in Glasgow is exploring the collapse of meaning in modern society.

Decade Decayed by Paisley-born artist Shaun Devenney, known for his striking street art, opens at the Grateful Gallery in Cowcaddens on October 2.

The exhibition features six oil paintings that examine themes of decline, failed institutions, and disillusionment in Scotland and the UK.

Shaun said: “My show Decade Decayed ties together imagery of broken play, corrupted faith, failed institutions, and absurd performances to comment on the collapse of meaning in modern life.

“It stages familiar symbols in contexts of abandonment or distortion, creating a darkly satirical vision of decline.

“The works juxtapose everyday banality with collapse, asking what it means to carry on against a backdrop of ruin.

“It’s not just about decline, but about how we can cling to rituals and symbols, even as their original power crumbles.

“The exhibition is free and I’d encourage anyone to attend, especially if they’ve never been to a show before.”

Shaun is known for murals such as the man sleeping in a deckchair on West Nile Street with a burning city behind him, and the Melbourne mural Big Ange, which depicts former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou lifting the first of his two Scottish Premiership titles.

One of the paintings on display is an adaptation of his mural on Union Street, showing waving clowns marching beneath union flags.

It is a work Shaun believes reflects on conformity, while the viewer considers what can become of us if we blindly follow.

The exhibition runs for 10 days, closing on October 12.

Prints will be available for purchase at the gallery and online.

OhPandah, a founder of the Grateful Gallery, said: “I’ve known Shaun and his work for years and was really happy to see him return to Glasgow after honing his craft in Melbourne for a few years.

“We spoke online a lot about painting the streets in Glasgow, so it was amazing to see him get right in about it when he returned and began painting large-scale murals across the city.

“Massive big ups to Shaun for all his hard work, really excited for this show.”
